However, unlike a float, the AUG uses its wings to convert vertical motion into horizontal motion, thus driving itself forward with very low power consumption. It is not fast when compared to a conventional AUV. However, AUGs that employ buoyancy-based propulsion characterize a substantial increase in duration and range, and can extend ocean surveying missions to thousands of kilometers of range, and from hours to weeks or months.
